PFPS is a broad term used to describe pain at the front of the knee and around the patella. PFPS is common in people who participate in sports; however, can occur in non-athletes.
PFPS causes pain and stiffness, making it difficult to climb stairs, run, kneel down, or perform day-to-day activities.Contributing factors may include:
- Problems with the alignment of the patella such as muscular imbalance or weakness in the quadriceps.
- Overuse/repetitive knee flexion
Common symptoms include:
- Dull ache
- Pains after sitting for long periods
- Pain on climbing stairs
Treatment; sport rehabilitation practitioner or sports physiotherapist can help to speed up the recovery process and facilitate your safe return to sport and play with:
- Manual therapy and patella mobilisations
- Massage
- Kinesio taping
- Stretching and strengthening exercise programs (especially for the quadriceps as these are the main patella stabilisers.)
Some exercises/stretches to help:
- Straight leg raises
- Clams
- Gluteal stretch
- Hamstring stretch
