SHOULDER IMPINGEMENT
————————————----
Shoulder impingement is a common cause of shoulder pain. It occurs when a tendon (supraspinatus tendon) or the subacromial bursa becomes inflamed and rubs or catches on the tissue and bone as you lift your arm.
Shoulder impingement can start suddenly or it can come on gradually.
Symptoms include:
- arm weakness
- pain at the top and outer side of the shoulder
- pain that worsens when lifting your arm (painful arc)
What can help:
- avoiding activity that involves repeatedly lifting the arm
- keep the arm moving in pain free range to avoid stiffness
- physical therapy
Exercises to help:
1. Scapular retraction and protraction
2. Scapular ‘push and pulls’ (arm horizontal)
3. Side lying internal and external rotations
4. PNF stretches
